Resumo: The theoretical basis and the experimental work done in order to assess the suitability of thermography as a tool in the study of fatigue crack initiation and propagation were discussed. In doing so, the fatigue properties of a polycarbonate sheet (PALSUNTM), free from residual stresses, were determined using a range of different thermographic techniques. Active thermography was used to locate hot spot areas where fatigue is bound to happen. Thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) was used to measure the stress fields and stress concentration factors that influence the initiation of cracks.
