Are you familiar with the importance of the CAPES evaluation? Every four years, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), an agency of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC), evaluates graduate programs across all fields and Brazilian universities to ensure that students receive instruction from qualified and scientifically productive faculty, as well as to guarantee the quality of the programs.
The highest possible rating in this evaluation is CAPES Grade 7. Only programs that also offer doctoral degrees are eligible to receive this rating, and they must demonstrate excellence in all evaluated criteria. Grade 7 represents recognition of scientific production of excellence at the international level.
The Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering at PUC-Rio has once again achieved the highest rating, Grade 7, in the current CAPES Quadrennial Evaluation (2021–2024). Since 2007, the Program has consistently received the maximum score, demonstrating the sustained excellence of its academic standards. The Program trains master’s and doctoral graduates who hold prominent positions in both Brazilian and international industry and academia, while developing cutting-edge scientific and technological research.
This achievement is the result of the continuous efforts of our faculty members, students, researchers, and technical-administrative staff, as well as of an academic project focused on providing outstanding education to our students, conducting scientific research with societal impact, and maintaining strong interaction with industry in Brazil and abroad.
We invite you to learn more about our program by visiting our website (www.mec.puc-rio.br) or by contacting the program’s faculty members. The admission selection process takes place each semester, with the availability of scholarships from funding agencies and from research projects financed by companies.
